Barflies Battle Through Adversity Against Hagen

The Barflies faced another challenging game, struggling with injuries and family emergencies that left them with only three starters in their regular positions. Despite the difficulties, the team showed determination and adaptability.

With key positions of catcher, shortstop, third base, and center field needing to be filled, Coach Pete made his first career start as catcher. Melvin, who recently joined the team, made his debut start in right field, bringing much-needed energy and enthusiasm.

The game started rough for the Barflies, as they went 1-2-3 in each of the first three innings. A glimmer of hope appeared in the fourth inning when the Barflies brought in three runs with two walks and three hits. However, Hagen responded strongly with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth, dampening the Barflies‘ spirits.

Adrien stepped in to pitch at the end of the fourth, managing to get a pop-up to short to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, another 1-2-3 inning on offense led to an early end to the game in the fifth as Hagen scored three more runs to secure the victory.

Despite the tough loss, the Barflies are not looking for excuses. They are determined to bounce back when they return home to face Dortmund in two weeks. The summer break will be a time to refocus and come back stronger for the second half of the season.

Marl Sly Dogs vs Bochum Barflies

Tough Loss for the Barflies Against Marl Slydogs

Despite being short-handed due to injuries, family emergencies, and university commitments, the Barflies made the trip to face the Marl Slydogs with just 10 players. The Slydogs took an early lead, scoring 6 runs in the first three innings. Bochum showed signs of life in the fourth, bringing in 4 runs to close the gap to just two.

Dennis, making his first start of the season with limited practice time, kept us in the game early on. However, the Slydogs capitalized on a missed flyball to center, bringing in 9 runs total in the fourth. A bad hop on the Marler infield jammed Stephan’s finger, preventing him from coming in as a reliever. Coach Pete stepped up, shutting down the Marl offense in the fifth temporarily with two popfly outs on two pitches.

In the top of the sixth, down by 13, Coach Pete’s hit, initially appearing to be off his foot, was ruled fair. Through an errant throw, a run scored and Pete made it to third. Drawing a pick attempt from the Slydogs pitcher, Pete managed to score another run as the throw skidded past the thirdbaseman. Despite these efforts, the comeback was short-lived as Marl put up four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game early.

We continue to grow and learn from each game. On to the next one! 🏆⚾
